MALACCA: The new level of tint for the rear windshield and passengers windows of cars must be at 30% of Visible Light Transmission (VLT) – down from 50% – under a new regulation from Nov 1.

However, the tint for front windscreens remains at 70% and driver’s windows at 50%.

Road Transport Department (JPJ) director-general Datuk Seri Ismail Ahmad said the new ruling was applicable to both local and imported vehicle models.

“The regulations are in line with the international standards. The exemption on tinted glass will be granted to vehicles used by the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong, sultans, governors, Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, mentris besar, chief ministers, Chief Justice and enforcement agencies like the police and Customs Department.

“This exemption is only permitted for the safety of the individuals and enforcement officers carrying out risky crime prevention operations,” he told reporters after meeting JPJ enforcement officers and vehicle inspectors at Seri Negeri here yesterday.

The Ops Gelap enforcement exercise, he said, would begin on Nov 1.

He warned that motorists who fell foul of the new tint levels would be given a compound of RM300 on the spot and could face a RM1,000 fine or two weeks in jail or both if their case was brought to court under the Motor Vehicle (Prohibition of Certain Types of Glass) Rules 1991.

On another matter, Ismail said the summonses issued by the department to traffic offenders had risen from 611,000 in 2012 to 1.02 million last year.

The figure, he said, was expected to swell to 1.2 million by Dec 31 based on the extensive enforcement and checks carried out nationwide.
