GEORGE TOWN: Security guard Mohd Najib Ahmad had been downcast for days after two robbers escaped with RM60,000 from a bank in Sungai Dua while he was on duty in May.
The 30-year-old said he waited for the right time to take them down but there were many customers at the bank at the time.
“I did not dare take the risk. I felt bad not being able to carry out my task well,” he said.
Three months later, when the same group of robbers struck again, Mohd Najib was ready for action. He fired two shots at one of the two robbers, killing him instantly.
The robber, who had donned a fake moustache and a baseball cap, entered the bank and shouted “robbery!” in Mandarin before pouring petrol on the counter and the floor.
Mohd Najib, who was behind the counter with a pump gun, fired two shots at the robber’s abdomen and left hand, fatally wounding him and blowing off his fingers.
“There were fewer customers this time and the robber appeared lax and thought he could get away easily,” he said, after receiving a letter of appreciation from Penang police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Wira Abdul Rahim Hanafi at the state police contingent headquarters here yesterday.
On another matter, SDCP Abdul Rahim said police would look into all possible angles behind the death of a 56-year-old detainee at the police headquarters in Bertam.
He said although an initial probe showed the investigating officer questioning the suspect followed standard operating procedures, an internal investigation into the case had been launched.
It was reported that the detainee, who was handcuffed, jumped to his death within the police compound on Sunday.
The man, who was arrested in connection with eight cheating cases, was being questioned when he reportedly ran out of the room and jumped off the second floor of the three-storey building. The man died of serious head injuries.
