Review decision, ministry urged

JOHOR BARU: MCA hopes the Education Ministry will review its decision to disallow the use of forecast SPM results for entry into pre-university or foundation programmes.

Deputy party president Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong said the decision would have a huge impact, especially on the future of the students.

“Students will be doing nothing as they have to wait for six months just to get their actual SPM results to know if they are able to continue with their tertiary education plans.

“Parents usually register their children at private institutions for pre-university or foundation programmes while waiting for the SPM results to be released,” he said after a visit to Kampung Ungku Mohsin here yesterday.

The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department urged the ministry to give its reasons for the decision, adding that both parents and professional bodies had expressed their concerns.

If a student failed to obtain the required qualifications to enter a pre-university or foundation programme based on the actual SPM results, he said it should be up to the institution concerned to decide whether to accept the applicant.

“The education system should be open and enhanced to be in line with the country’s aspiration to become a developed nation within the next six years,” said Dr Wee.
