Ukraine reaffirms commitment to help

PETALING JAYA: The Ukrainian government has reaffirmed its commitment to help in the investigation into the MH17 crash, said Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.

He said he had met Ukraine Deputy Defence Minister Admiral Ihor Kabanenko who reaffirmed that his country would assist in resuming the search, recovery and investigation operations at the crash site.

“We agreed in principle that an international team comprising personnel from Australia, the Netherlands and Malaysia should gain early safe access to the MH17 crash site in east Ukraine,” he added in a statement yesterday.

Hishammuddin, who is on a working visit to Ukraine, said the team would be working together with the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and other relevant international partners to ensure multilateral co-operation.

He would meet representatives of the OSCE and the Combined Joint International Task Force to discuss the investigation.

“Admiral Kabanenko and I have also agreed to work together to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice,” he said.

“This (investigation into the crash) is truly an international effort and we are fortunate not to be alone in this.”

He added that Major-General Bohdan Bondar, Chief of the Command Centre of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, gave a briefing on the complex situation in east Ukraine.

From the briefing, he understood that the crash site, which is within the conflict area, was now volatile and inaccessible.

Hishammuddin will also be meeting Ukrainian Defence Minister Valeriy Heletey.
