Trio charged over bid to support IS

SEPANG: Three men were charged with attempting to provide support to the Islamic State (IS) with intent to become members of the terrorist group.

Architect Mohd Syafrein Rasid, trader Mohd Rosmadi Che Daud and technician Mohamad Yusoffe Ishak were charged with intending to give support to the terrorist group and becoming its members by taking a Qatar Airways flight from Kuala Lumpur International Airport to Istanbul in Turkey.

Mohd Syafrein, 26, Mohd Rosmadi, 42, and Mohamad Yusoffe, 26, are alleged to have committed the offence at an Immigration counter of the departure hall in KLIA here at about 8.55am on Sept 25.

They also face an alternative charge of providing benefit to the IS group at the same time and place.

The trio are charged under Section 130J(1)(a) of the Penal Code read together with Section 511.

No plea was recorded and no bail was offered.

The court set Nov 20 for mention pending a transfer of the case to the High Court.

Deputy public prosecutor Shukor Abu Bakar informed Sessions Court judge Aizatul Akmal Maharani that they were arrested under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012, which does not allow any bail.

All three were not represented.
