Adnan to unveil plans to restore Camerons

KUANTAN: Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob (pic) is expected to announce plans on how Cameron Highlands will be rehabilitated soon.

There is already a draft on the measures set in place to restore the resort and agricultural district, but the state government has not elaborated on the plans.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) submitted 12 recommendations to overcome the illegal and excessive land clearing in the highlands to State Secretary Datuk Seri Muhammad Safian Ismail and Adnan in July.

The recommendations included reviews of several policies, like the issuance of temporary occupation licences (TOLs), separating the jurisdiction of the district council and its land office.

It also suggested the setting up of a certification and complaints system to check those involved in projects in the area and illegal activities.

Other measures included having a clearer policy on land development, better enforcement, as well as clearly gazetting and demarcating of forest reserve areas.

Muhammad Safian said the state government would follow the MACC’s recommendations.

This was to be implemented by creating a new district council president’s position, he had said “to prevent overlapping of powers and to provide specific roles”.

The Cameron Highlands district officer currently heads both the authorities.

Muhammad Safian also said the issuance of TOLs had been frozen since 2007.
