Mountain biker dies after being flung from flyover

ALOR SETAR: A mountain biker died after he was flung off a 15m-high flyover after being rammed from behind by a car here.

Motorcycle shop owner Ch’ng Kok Seong (pic), 36, whose body landed inside a drain below the flyover, died on the spot due to serious head injuries.

Kota Setar district police chief Asst Comm Adzaman Mohd Jan said the accident happened at about 6.35am at the flyover, which connects Simpang Kuala to Alor Mengkudu.

Ch’ng, who leaves behind a 34-year-old wife and three children aged between four and seven, owned a motorcycle shop in Tajar, Langgar.

It is learnt that Ch’ng, from Taman Berjasa, Lebuhraya Sultan Abdul Halim, only picked up mountain biking as a hobby about three months ago.

ACP Adzaman said the impact caused Ch’ng to be flung over the guardrails.

“His badly damaged mountain bike was still on the flyover. Police will carry out investigations under Section 41(1)(C) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving,” he said yesterday.

ACP Adzaman said Ch’ng was cycling from the traffic light in Simpang Kuala and was already on the flyover when the accident happened.

“The deceased was said to be heading to Taman Laguna Mas to meet up with a group of cyclists before heading for a mountain bike competition in Pendang. He was cycling alone at the time of the accident,” he said.

ACP Adzaman said the driver of the car, 34, surrendered herself at the Kota Setar district traffic headquarters some three hours after the accident.

“The driver is from Taman Padi Mas, which is less than 1km away from the accident scene. She was alone in the car at the time.

“After the accident, the driver panicked and left the scene to get help from her family members before surrendering herself at the police station,” he said.

Ch’ng’s mother-in-law Hou Kin Aik, 54, said her daughter received a call about the accident at 6.48am yesterday.
