No threat of toxic fumes, residents assured

SEREMBAN: Fire engulfed four warehouses containing toxic waste at the Kualiti Alam’s Integrated Scheduled Waste Management Centre near here, triggering fear among nearby residents.

Authorities assured the public that everything was under control and that there was no threat of toxic fumes that could adversely affect the people.

The fire in Bukit Nanas which started at about 1.30pm yesterday resulted in thick black smoke engulfing the area.

A Seremban 2 Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said the situation was brought under control a few hours later.

“No loss of life was reported,” he said.

He said the department sent two fire engines and 14 firemen from the Seremban 2 fire and rescue station to the location after receiving a call at 1.41pm.

Hazardous Materials Unit officers and Emergency Medical Rescue Services members were also rushed to the scene.

Another fire engine and six firemen from the Seremban fire and rescue station joined the first team to help put out the fire.

The cause of fire and losses were still being investigated, he added.

A state department of environment spokesman dismissed postings in social media that the fire resulted in toxic fumes engulfing the whole area.

He advised the public not to panic and said there was no danger of poisonous or hazardous gas spreading in the surrounding area. — Bernama
