Joint operation nets traffic offenders and illegal immigrants

BUTTERWORTH: The Penang Road Transport Department (JPJ) issued 205 summons notices for various traffic offences in one night during Ops Sepadu at the Sungai Dua toll plaza near here.

State JPJ director Datuk Hassan Yaacob said the offences included driving without licence or with expired road tax or insurance, failing to comply with number plate specifications, fitting high intensity discharge headlamps, and other technical offences.

Four vehicles from Thailand were also found without international circulation permits during the operation on Wednesday.

The state Immigration Depart-ment detained 13 Bangladeshis, five Myanmar nationals, a Sri Lankan and a Thai national — all men in their 20s and 30s — for not having valid documents.

A local in his 40s was also picked up after he was found transporting four foreigners who were without travel documents.

Hassan said 229 personnel from 12 agencies were involved in the joint operation.-thestar
