Youths rise against human traffickers

PETALING JAYA: Concerns over the rise of human trafficking cases have prompted a youth grouped calling themselves “Change Your World” to launch a campaign to create greater awareness among Malaysians on the plight of trafficked victims.

The three-month campaign started last Saturday called #BeMyProtector, aims to curb human trafficking and target youths to explore important issues, thus empowering them to act on such cases.

The campaign is co-supported by the Selangor state government and migrant rights group Tenaganita.

It also features various personalities including Global Movement of Moderates chief executive officer Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, musician Joe Flizzow, artist Daphne Iking, Selangor Assembly Speaker Hannah Yeoh and veteran actor Mano Maniam.

Its co-founder Kelvin Lim said: “We want to engage people and want to empower them to act as well as challenge them to stop the number of cases from further increasing.

“We also want to highlight cases happening in our own backyard. Something serious must be done.”

The campaign is divided into three steps where the public can:

> Save – the victims by calling Tenaganita Hotline at 012-335 0512,

> Shoot – wear a protector wristband as a sign of support, and

> Share – the campaign with as many people.

Lim said the campaigners would also be going to some 20 colleges around Petaling Jaya, Subang and Kinrara area.

Malaysians, Lim said, could no longer ignore the cases of abuse and mistreatment by irresponsible employers.

“Often, the victims are not paid their wages and work seven days a week with little rest.

“This happens in every industry – even in small businesses,” he said.
