Sept date for Saturday Night Fever

KUALA LUMPUR: Dust off your bell-bottoms, put on your “boogie shoes” and let’s explode with “disco inferno!”

Malaysians will soon be burning with night fever as the acclaimed Saturday Night Fever: The Musical hits our shores this September.

The show will be playing at Istana Budaya from Sept 4 to Sept 13 as part of the Saturday Night Fever 2015 Asia Tour. It is directed by the multi-award winning Filipino director Bobby Garcia.

“Saturday Night Fever is a show that has an appeal across the board – from the young ones all the way to the older fans.

“This is because of the wonderful music of the Bee Gees and the great choreography, which has elements of not only disco, but salsa as well!” said Grace Lee, managing director of Milestone Production, the show’s organiser here.

The musical, which features a main cast directly from Broadway, will showcase glittering costumes, retro cool as well as dramatic backdrops of New York from the heady 1970s disco era.

“We will also have nine musicians, who’ll be playing in our orchestra pit. They will be performing live music for the audience to enjoy all through the show. It won’t only be visually stimulating, but musically as well,” added Lee at the show’s launch at Istana Budaya here yesterday.

Saturday Night Fever: The Musical is based on the popular 1977 film featuring John Travolta.

The iconic movie defined the disco phenomenon and the musical it spawned has kept the spirit of disco alive for the new generation.

Premiering at London’s West End in 1998 and New York’s Broadway in 1999, this musical has been watched by over 10 million people in over 2,800 shows in 20 countries around the world.

It first played in Kuala Lumpur in 2004.

The show features many popular Bee Gees hits such as Stayin’ Alive’, How Deep is Your Love, More Than A Woman and You Should Be Dancing.

Saturday Night Fever: The Musical is presented by Milestone Production and supported by Malaysia Major Events, a division of Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau, an agency under the Ministry of Tourism and Culture.

Istana Budaya is the venue partner while The Star is the official media partner.

Show times are at 8.30pm with an additional 3pm show on Saturdays and Sundays.

Tickets are RM568, RM398, RM338, RM268 and RM138 inclusive of 6% GST and RM4 ticketing fee.
