1MDB questions Tony Pua’s ‘selective approach’

KUALA LUMPUR: 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) has questioned Petaling Jaya Utara member of parliament Tony Pua’s ‘selective’ approach when it comes to matters pertaining the investment arm.

“We note that Pua has yet again become an instant expert on certain technical matters. This tiresome approach is designed for nothing more than a political point scoring which benefits no one.

“We suggest that he focuses on matters on which he has taken a ‘tidak apa’ (lackadaisical attitude).

For example, did he know that (Sarawak Report founder) Clare Rewcastle-Brown was involved in the sale of stolen goods, based on the following quote attributed to her, which neither Brown nor Tony has denied – “I have told Tony (Pua) that if he doesn’t pay up, then he will be seen to have been dealing with me as you (Justo) are threatening to publish (make public the deal).”

1MDB also suggested that Pua commence an enquiry as to how Bank Negara Malaysia’s (BNM) confidential investigation documents ended up in the possession Sarawak Report or how confidential Public Accounts Committee (PAC) documents such as the Auditor-General interim report ended up with The Wall Street Journal.

“It is important to highlight that BNM had clearly stated “… the Bank concluded that permissions required under the ECA for 1MDB’s investments abroad were obtained based on inaccurate or without complete disclosure of material information relevant to the Bank’s assessment of 1MDB’s applications.”

The findings, said 1MDB, appear to different from the allegations of fraud, embezzlement, theft, and money-laundering made against 1MDB by Rewcastle-Brown, Pua, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal and others.

It said the Attorney-General had accordingly determined that no further action was to be taken against 1MDB on the subject, having reviewed the investigation papers and recommendations of BNM.

1MDB had earlier filed a police report on the action by one or more parties whom they suspect leaked and sold confidential or proprietary information.
