Penang calls of culling of stray dogs

GEORGE TOWN: Penang has called off the culling of stray dogs after revoking a declaration that the state was a rabies-infected area.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the Penang Rabies-Infected Area Order 2015 he issued on Sept 15 was revoked on Friday.

“I was informed by the Department of Veterinary yesterday that the last case in Penang was on Sept 21 and there is low prevalence.

“Perlis has identified a total of 20 dogs with rabies as of now, Kedah with 18 dogs while Penang has four dogs despite the high population. We felt that the situation is under control and hence the order to revoke,” he said in a press conference on Friday.

He however stressed that the order to have all pet dogs vaccinated is still in operation and advised all owners to vaccinate their dogs.
