NIBONG TEBAL: Computer technician Tan Yi Sheng, 20, rode past an accident scene on his way to work, not knowing that a motorcyclist pinned under a trailer was his father.

He had slowed down his motorcycle as there was a huge crowd and did not realise that his father, Tan Teng Cheong, 49, had been run over by the 12m long unmanned trailer.

Teng Cheong was pinned under the trailer and died on the spot.

When Yi Sheng reached his workplace in Bukit Minyak, he received a message from a friend, who had sent him a photo of Teng Cheong’s wrecked motorcycle.

“I rushed back to the scene. My father’s body was already covered with a white cloth when I got there.

“When I passed by the place earlier, the accident looked really bad to me and I thought that even if the person under the trailer was not dead, that person must be seriously injured. I never thought it was my father,” said Yi Sheng when met at his father’s funeral wake at the car park of the Puteri Gunung flats in Simpang Ampat, near here yesterday.

He added that he and his mother, Yew Poo Cheu, 50, still could not come to terms with his father’s death.

Yi Sheng said it was illogical how an umanned trailer could move by itself when it had been parked for three weeks.

“Until now, not even the lorry owner or people from the company who owns the lorry came forward to give us an explanation or to pay their last respects to my father.

“We might consider taking legal action,” he said.

Poo Cheu described her husband as a caring and thrifty man who would spend the least he could on himself in order to provide everything for his family.

At 8.40am on Tuesday, the 12m-long trailer rolled away from a petrol station in Jalan Tasek Mutiara here, hitting Teng Cheong’s motorcycle from the side and killed him on the spot.

It took the firemen around 15 minutes to extricate Teng Cheong’s body with the aid of a forklift.

Teng Cheong’s funeral will be held at 10.30am on Saturday. He will be cremated at the Berapit crematorium.
