Police expected to interview Tun M today

KUALA LUMPUR: Police investigators probing Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad over alleged defamatory statements are expected to question the former prime minister today.

An aide to Dr Mahathir told the New Straits Times that police will conduct the recording of statement at the latter’s office at the Yayasan Albukhary, here, at 11am.

A police vehicle with three officers in it was seen being driven into the office compound at 10.40am, presumably to interview Dr Mahathir.

It was reported that police are investigating Dr Mahathir over remarks made at Central Market while the Bersih 4 rally in August was being held.

Among the statements he made was that Umno leaders had been taking money On Nov 3, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar had said Dr Mahathir was not being investigated for his presence at the Bersih 4 rally, but for alleged seditious statements.

He had said Dr Mahathir had provided today as a tentative date, but this was subject to the availability of Dr Mahathir’s lawyer.

Khalid had also said police would not be calling Dr Mahathir in for questioning at any police station out of respect for him and had left it up to the former prime minister to decide on a venue.

Dr Mahathir is reportedly being investigated under section 500 of the Penal Code for criminal defamation over his remarks on Aug 29 and 30.-nst
