Police seek extradition of Abu Sayyaf duo nabbed in Philippines: IGP

KUALA LUMPUR: Police will apply for the extradition of two Abu Sayyaf Guerrilla (ASG) members, believed to be linked to abduction of Malaysians, nabbed by Philippines authorities recently.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the federal police had made contact with their counterpart in the Philippines and relayed their intention to get the suspects to Malaysian soil for investigation.

“Police have informed the Philippines authorities that we want to have the two suspects extradited here.

“This was communicated verbally soon after we were informed about the arrests, and we will soon send an official request,” he said earlier today.

Khalid spoke to reporters after a ceremony at the federal police headquarters, here. When asked if Bukit Aman intend to send its investigators to the republic, he said it depends on the outcome of the extradition request.

Philippines authorities nabbed the ASG members – Saddam Jailani and Kadaffy Kamsa, in two separate operations in Jolo, Sulu on Friday and Saturday.

The suspects are believed to be a member of ASG sub-group led by Alhabshy Misaya, which was linked to the abduction of engineer Bernard Then and restaurant manager Thien Nyuk Fun from Sandakan in May.

The Philippine Star news portal reported that Saddam was captured by a joint police-army team at a wharf in Jolo on Friday.

Philippine-based news agency Inquirer.net reported that Kadaffy was arrested the next day while he was receiving treatment in a hospital following a vehicular accident.-nst
