Divers search lake for evidence linked to California shooting

LOS ANGELES: Divers on Thursday searched a California lake near the site of the San Bernardino massacre looking for evidence that may have been left by the husband and wife behind the attack.

David Bowdich, assistant director of the FBI’s office in Los Angeles, told reporters there were indications that US-born Syed Farook and his Pakistani wife Tashfeen Malik had visited the park where Seccombe Lake is located on the day of the December 2 shooting or previously.

He would not disclose what investigators were looking for in the lake, saying the search would last for days.

“We would be remiss not to go into this lake and conduct a thorough search for any evidence items that may come back,” he said.

The Los Angeles Times, quoting law enforcement sources, said divers were looking for electronic devices, a hard drive and other items linked to the shooters.

Authorities have said that the couple, who left behind a six-month-old daughter, had been radicalised for some time and practiced target shooting at a gun range days before the attack that killed 14 and injured 22.

Officials had previously put the number of injured at 21 but Bowdich said a woman who was at the holiday party where the killing took place had come forward this week and checked herself into hospital.–AFP/nst
