Liow visits fire victims

KUANTAN: Ten families were made homeless after their wooden homes were destroyed in a fire in Kampung Baru Karak late Friday.

The fire was believed to have started in the kitchen of a centrally-located house in the village, according to Supt II Ashrul Riezal Asbar, from the Pahang Fire and Rescue Department operations division.

There were 41 fire victims including a handicapped person from the 10 houses which were built in the 1950s.

Losses are estimated at RM650,000.

Bentong MP Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai who visited the victims yesterday, said, “It is a really sad incident. The fire spread so quickly that they could not save anything from their houses.”

He said some of the victims were crying when they recounted their losses.

“I extend my sympathies to them,” he said, adding that a task force has been set up to help them rebuild their homes.

“The village head will be chairing the committee and help them raise funds to rebuild the houses,” Liow, who is also the MCA President told The Star yesterday.

He said one of the houses did not even have a land title and has requested the Bentong District and Land office to help the family to obtain one.

“Once they have the land title, then they can submit a housing plan to rebuild the house,” he said.

Bentong MCA vice-chairman, Mark Lai Wah Foong said the victims were temporarily staying with their friends and relatives.

“Our division and MCA’s crisis relief squad will provide them with basic necessities while Liow has donated RM500 to each of the families,” he said.

Three officers, 20 firemen and 19 auxiliary firemen from Karak, Bentong, Manchis, Perting, Temerloh and Maran were sent to put out the fire.

“The fire was brought under control within 20 minutes but was extinguished four hours later as the houses were built close to one another, allowing the fire to spread quickly,” said Supt II Ashrul Riezal.
