Be sensitive to threats that tarnish Islam, says Ruler

KLANG: Imam in Selangor must be sensitive to threats that tarnish Islam and be wary of efforts to disrupt national peace and order, says the Sultan of Selangor.

Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah said what was worse was that the threats came from Muslims themselves in various ways, such as Daesh militants (Islamic State); pluralism and liberalism ideologies; anti-hadith movement and deviant groups such as Qadiani and deviations of the faith brought through the practice of mysticism.

“The imam must stress that we, in Selangor, practice Sunni teachings,” he said at a ceremony to hand over the appointment letters to 827 imam in Selangor at Istana Alam Shah here yesterday.

Present at the event were Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali and Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) chairman Datuk Setia Mohamad Adzib Mohd Isa.

Sultan Sharafuddin said the imam played a major role in educating, nurturing and providing Muslims an understanding of Islam. It was especially so in the light of the dangers posed by threats that could weaken and demolish the faith of Muslims, the Sultan added.

He said this could be done with the imam being involved in guiding religious talk programmes at their respective mosques to create awareness among the faithful.

The Sultan of Selangor also stressed that the imam should view the directive issued by Mais against inviting religious speakers and preachers who did not have credentials from Mais seriously.

“I have also ordered that religious preachers from abroad are not allowed at all to deliver religious talks in mosques in Selangor except at the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque (State Mosque) Shah Alam, Tengku Ampuan Jemaah Mosque, Bukit Jelutong, Shah Alam and the Sultan Suleiman Royal Mosque in Klang,” he said. — Bernama
