Statement was made based on facts, there will be no apology, says IGP

KUALA LUMPUR: The Inspector-General of Police today explained that he would not apologise to the family of Aminulrasyid Amzah, who was shot dead by police in 2010 as his statement was made based on facts.

Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said many people had misunderstood his earlier statement.

“I was asked many times whether I will apologise to the family after the verdict but I will not apologise as the statement that I made at the time was based on facts of the case at the time.

“If the court does not discuss the existence of the parang, that is not my problem, but the fact remained that the parang was there in the car.

“If we look at the record, it was sent to chemical lab to be tested but it was not brought up during the civil case,” he said, adding that the question of his apology should not have arised.

Khalid said the claims that he was lying to protect his men were untrue as it was based on facts of the case. “I am not arrogant, I am standing by the fact of the case.

Besides I have never said the victim used the parang, I only said it was found in the car, so do not try to twist my words,” he said. Khalid also said he would take action against those who twisted his words.

On Thursday, Shah Alam High Court judge Datuk Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim ruled in favour of Aminulrasyid’s family in their civil lawsuit against the police officer who fired the killing shot, the IGP and the federal government.

He pointed out that there was no proof to substantiate Khalid’s claim during a press conference after the fatal shooting that the police acted after discovering a machete in the car the 14-year-old was driving.

Khalid was Selangor police chief at the time of the shooting in Shah Alam.
