Policemen claim trial to setting free suspected rapist

SHAH ALAM: Two cops accused of having intentionally let a suspected rapist go free pleaded not guilty to the offence at the magistrate’s court today.

Lance Corporals Shafie Sudiman, 31, and Mohd Nazlee Mohamad Yusof, 38, were jointly charged on their part as public servants with omitting to apprehend Cambodian Koew Tourn when they are bound by the law to apprehend him.

They allegedly committed the offence at the Sungai Pelong police station in Sungai Buloh around 5am on April 14.

In pleading for minimum bail, their counsel Ahmad Zaharil Muhaiyar said the duo are still police personnel and have no reason to abscond.

“They were not suspended from duty. They are still policemen. In fact they are on patrol duty today,” he said pleading for a RM1,500 bail be imposed on his clients.

Magistrate Farah Azura Mohd Saad granted RM3,000 bail with one surety each accused and set May 25 for mention.

Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Huda Ramli prosecuted.

It was reported that a Cambodian national, who allegedly raped a 4-year-old Cambodian girl was released by two policemen after he was arrested.

The suspect was apprehended by members of the public and handed over to two policemen, who were on patrol at that time.

However, the policemen freed him at the Sungai Pelong police station under the pretext that the victim’s mother refused to lodge a police report.-nst
