Surendran fails to get sedition case referred to Federal Court

KUALA LUMPUR: Lawyer N. Surendran (pic) has failed to refer his sedition case to the Federal Court.

High Court Judicial Commissioner Ab Karim Ab Rahman made the decision on the grounds that the questions on unconstitutionality of a charge had been answered by the Apex Court in the case of law lecturer Dr Azmi Sharom.

JC Ab Karim ordered the case to be remitted back to the Sessions Court for trial.

The Sessions Court has fixed April 21 for mention.

Surendran has claimed trial to uttering seditious words in a YouTube video at 2pm on Aug 8, 2014.

The PKR vice-president allegedly committed the offence at the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya in his capacity as counsel for jailed opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Surendran is accused of committing sedition by saying that the Sodomy 2 proceedings against Anwar were “an attempt to jail the opposition leader of Malaysia”.

If found guilty of the offence under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act, Surendran faces a fine of not more than RM5,000, a jail term of no more than three years or both.-thestar
