KL at a standstill after downpour causes flash floods

KUALA LUMPUR: Traffic along several major roads here were temporarily paralysed as heavy downpour caused flash floods in the federal capital.

City Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Azizan Ismail said the department received distress calls on flash floods along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Halim and Jalan Lingkungan Budi.

“We received the calls between 7.15pm and 7.39pm claiming that traffic was at a standstill, with over 100 vehicles submerged in front of Duta Vista and 15 vehicles submerged at the Universiti Malaya Bangsar entrance.

“Our personnel arrived at Duta Vista at around 7.26pm and instructed all occupants of the submerged cars to leave their vehicles and head to higher ground for their own safety.

“At the Universiti Malaya Entrance along Jalan Lingkungan Budi our men arrived at the scene at 7.58pm and saved 11 people including a woman who suffered difficulty breathing,” he said when contacted yesterday.

He said they also received reports of flash floods along Jalan Bangsar but the callers said no one was trapped in their vehicles.

Online social networking sites were flooded with pictures and personal accounts of flash flood victims

A Twitter user N Rajkumar tweeted that the New Pantai Expressway was closed to traffic near Angkasapuri as flash floods submerged a stretch of the highway from Subang heading toward Kuala Lumpur.

Unusual Traffic KL also tweeted that flash floods occurred along Jalan Ampang as well.

A Facebook user going by the name of Han Min Ng posted some pictures of cars submerged in floods. He also wrote a posting saying: “Oh my god! God help us! We are trapped in the car! How could this happen?”

The flash floods are not the first to hit the Klang Valley this week, with flooding reported in Shah Alam on Tuesday.-thestar
