Johor Baru fireman returns cash found in burning shop to owner

JOHOR BARU: A fireman, who was fighting a blaze with his colleagues at a two-storey shop selling prayer items in Taman Penggawa Barat here, found about RM30,000 in the premises and returned the money to the shop owner.

Hairul Mat Nin, based at the Fire and Rescue Department here, was trying to salvage items in the shop when he stumbled upon the bundles of cash in one of the rooms upstairs, said operations commander Khairul Azhar Abdul Aziz.

“The cash, in ringgit and foreign currencies, was returned to the 42-year-old owner Teo Kian Yong.

“We commend Hairul’s attitude and honesty in returning the money to its rightful owner and we hope all firemen can practice the same values,” he Khairul Azhar said.

Fire started at the shop at around 4pm on Friday and a team of firemen arrived at the scene about 20 minutes later.

The fire was brought under control at around 5.10pm but the shop was badly burnt.-thestar
