We’ll nab Namewee when he returns to Malaysia, say police

GEORGE TOWN: Namewee (pic, who found himself in hot water again over his latest video that was shot at a floating mosque here, will be arrested when he returns to Malaysia.

State police chief Comm Datuk Abdul Ghafar Rajab said police were monitoring the controversial singer-songwriter’s whereabouts.

He is currently overseas, believed to be in China.

“We will arrest and probe him when he returns,” he said.

Comm Abdul Ghafar said the Tanjung Bungah Floating Mosque committee had been interviewed.

He added that police would soon interview those in charge of the Hindu temple, church and Chinese temple featured in the video Oh My God.

“So far, we have recorded four statements, including from those who have lodged police reports.

“Investigations are ongoing,” he told reporters after witnessing the handing-over of duties between acting state narcotics chief Deputy Supt Ng Ah Thiam and the new department chief Supt Maidu Abu Bakar at the Penang police headquarters yesterday.

On Saturday, 20 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) lodged police reports against the celebrity over the video.

Oh My God features the floating mosque in the backdrop, among other places of worship in Penang.

The groups accused Namewee of insulting Islam in his latest work.

About 15 representatives from the NGOs also set fire to and tore up a poster of the rapper after making the reports here.

The four-minute clip, which was uploaded onto YouTube recently, features a Taiwanese band.

This is not the first time the 33-year-old Johorean has courted controversy.

In 2007, Namewee gained notoriety for mocking the national anthem in a parody, Negarakuku, in a rap video.

Two years later, he lashed out at Tenaga Nasional in an expletive-laden video clip about frequent power outages in his hometown Muar.-thestar
