Bersih not expecting large turnout for its roadshows

GEORGE TOWN: Bersih is expecting a low turnout for its series of nationwide roadshows ahead of its Nov 19 rally in Kuala Lumpur.

Bersih chairman Maria Chin Abdullah was unfazed by the small crowds which have shown up at its events so far, and predicts that the number will increase on the day of the rally itself.

“We don’t expect a lot of people to turn up (in all parts of Malaysia) because they (the roadshows) are just awareness programmes.

“The bigger crowd is expected to come out during the Nov 19 rally,” she told reporters after attending the opening of a Bersih gallery here.

On the possibility of Pas joining the rally, Maria said they had invited the Islamic party to come on board.

“It is up to them (whether to join in the Bersih 5 rally),” she said.

Meanwhile, Chin also condemned the violent act committed against a Bersih 5 campaign participant in Penang.-nst
