IGP Khalid: Report if you are offended by Jamal’s ‘war declaration’

KUALA LUMPUR: Those who feel offended by words uttered by Red Shirts leader Datuk Seri Jamal Yunos against election watchdog Bersih 5.0 can lodge police reports, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.

Khalid, however, said the words used by Jamal was a matter of interpretation, “if they amount to something worth reporting.”

On Thursday, after he was released from remand, Jamal said he was “declaring war” on Bersih and threatened to mobilise the Red Shirt movement nationwide against the yellow shirts.

“It’s up to him…It’s up to you. If you think that amounts to something that needs to be reported, then lodge a report. We will investigate.

“But to say he declared war…For me, that’s just a war of words. It’s how you accept it. You can wage your own war of words against him,” Khalid told reporters at the police academy on Friday.

Asked if the scores of Jamal supporters who had gathered outside the Dang Wangi police headquarters on Thursday amounted to an illegal assembly, Khalid said it was not a problem for the Sungai Besar Umno division chief to “express his feelings”.

“He didn’t bother anyone. It was also done briefly, while he was walking out of the police headquarters.

“If that qualifies as an illegal assembly, then we should be taking action against more people including all those gathering outside police stations, Bukit Aman and prisons.

“Don’t we have better things to do?

“We make proper considerations for events such as these,” he said.

Khalid reiterated that police would act against the Red Shirts and Bersih 5.0 if the Peaceful Assembly Act on holding rallies are not complied with.

“We won’t make exceptions for anyone. None.

“So don’t ask me whether we will take action against ‘red’ or ‘blue’ or ‘white’. We will take action against all including ‘yellow’,” he said.-thestar
