Mohd Afendi sells birds for higher income after quitting job as an operator

JOHOR BARU: A man decided to quit his job as a factory worker and get into the business of selling birds for a higher income.

Bird seller Mohd Afendi Hassan, 33, said that after about 10 years working as an operator in a factory, he felt the job was taking too much of his leisure time and did not come with a satisfying salary.

“As a factory worker, I had 12-hour work days but could only earn about RM1,200 per month.

“But by selling birds, I can get at least double or triple my previous salary with no fixed schedule,” he said at his shop along Jalan Persiaran Bumi Hijau here.

It was his passion for birds, especially those used for competitions, that led him to enter this business four years ago.

His passion was developed when he was 10 years old after he followed his late father to look for birds in the forest and joined bird competitions at his hometown in Kelantan.

Mohd Affendi added that among the birds he has are Jambul, Terkukur, Merbuk, Pipit, Baji and Merbah Jambul, and their price ranges from RM100 to RM3,000 based on their colour, age and sound.

The sixth of 10 siblings also said most of the birds sold in his shop were caught by him or sourced from suppliers in Kelantan.

“I go to many places to get the birds, including Ulu Tiram, Pasir Gudang, Segamat and Batu Pahat. I can catch between 500 and 2,000 birds from 6am to 2am.

“Apart from selling them to bird suppliers and those active in bird competitions, I also have customers who look for pets as they love the sounds the birds make,” he said.

Mohd Afendi said Terkukur, Merbuk and Merbah Jambul were popular for competitions and were more expensive.

He said he enjoyed his current job and could now have a better life for himself and spend more time with his siblings and family.-thestar
