No plans to lower age for m-bike licences

KUALA LUMPUR: There are no plans to lower the minimum age of 16 years for those seeking a motorcycle licence.

Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Ab Aziz Kaprawi said the age requirement was for an individual to apply for a valid driving licence.

“We feel that those below the age of 16 are not matured enough to be on the road,” he said when replying a question raised by Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff (PAS–Rantau Panjang).

Earlier, to a question by Datuk Abd Aziz Sheikh Fadzir Ab Aziz (BN–Kulim Bandar Baru), Ab Aziz said that as of September, a total of 231,788 summonses were issued against road users for various licence related offences.

He said the summonses were issued for failing to renew licences, using licences not for their specific classification and having fake licences.

Abd Aziz said cost was not the reason why some motorists do not have valid car or motorcycle licences.

He said programmes such as 1Community 1JPJ and myLesen were aimed at helping youths obtain their Class B2 motorcycle licences.-thestar
