Red Shirts leader hits out at ‘unfair’ arrest

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Jamal Yunos has labelled his arrest by the police as “double standard” and called on the authorities to be fair in its action.

Talking to reporters outside the Dang Wangi district police headquarters, the Sungai Besar Umno division chief said although he understood police’s responsibility in ensuring public order, he could not accept the action.

“It’s double standard and an insult towards me. Just imagine my wife’s feelings, especially my children’s seeing their father being arrested and handcuffed just after coming out of the arrival gate at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

“I did not deserve that. Therefore I declare war against Bersih and will mobilise the Red Shirt movement nationwide to fight Bersih,” he said Wednesday.

Jamal, who was released on police bail at about 5pm after being remanded for two days, said the police should also arrest those from Bersih.

“It’s unfair how the ‘yellow people’ are being treated fairly and none of them got arrested despite holding four demonstrations trying to topple a government democratically elected by the people. Now, they’re going to hold their fifth protest.

“During my arrest, some of them even made baseless statements, as far as accusing me of being tested positive for ganja. Where is the fairness in that?” he asked.

On Wednesday, Jamal was detained in connection with alleged incidents of violence associated with the anti-Bersih Red Shirts group.

The Bukit Aman CID director Comm Datuk Seri Mohmad Salleh confirmed that the Sungai Besar Umno division chief was detained by CID officers to assist investigations into violent incidents in Teluk Intan and Sabak Bernam involving anti-Bersih supporters.

Both incidents occurred during the Bersih convoy.

Jamal was investigated under Section 500 and 503 of the Penal Code for defamation and criminal intimidation as well as Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act.-thestar
