Relief for Subang, Puchong residents as water supply returns

KUALA LUMPUR: Residents in Subang and Puchong are now breathing a sigh of relief as water supply, which was disrupted for the past few days, was fully restored as of 2pm today.

Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Selangor) Corporate Communications head Amin Lin Abdullah said relief water will be supplied to premises still experiencing problems.

“Water supply has been restored in many places in Subang and Puchong as of 2pm today. We will continue to deliver relief water supply to premises which require them,” he told the New Straits Times today.

The cause of the water disruption was pollution affecting the Sungai Semenyih Water Treatment Plant.

Amin said the frequent disruptions since early October have been due to the treatment plant’s emergency shutdowns (over pollution concerns), while other temporary water interruptions were mainly due to burst pipes.

On claims that the constant water disruptions are caused by murky waters near the treatment plant, Amin said that most rivers in Malaysia are murky but treatable by all water treatment plants.

“The odour pollution (at the Semenyih plant) was caused by solvents or chemicals illegally disposed of or discharged into the waterway,” he said.

The source of odour pollution was pinpointed to Sungai Buah in Nilai, Negri Sembilan.

Yesterday, Selangor executive councilor for Tourism, Environment, Green Technology and Consumer Affairs Elizabeth Wong said the water pollution there (Sungai Buah) remains critical.

She said water samples taken from the river, which flows into the Sungai Semenyih plant, contains the toxic 4-bromodiphenyl ether, and a sample has been submitted to the Natural Resources and Environment Minister, Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.-nst
