KUALA LUMPUR: Wanita Umno wants the syariah courts to be empowered and for it to be on par with the civil courts.

The wing’s chief Tan Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said it was time for improvements to be made to the country’s Islamic legal system.

“There has to be a clearer system. We want the number of female syariah lawyers to be increased, and the acceptance of syariah lawyers to be coordinated.

“We also want a Syariah Lawyers’ Council, whose role would be similar to that of the Malaysian Bar Council,” she said in her policy speech at the wing’s meeting here, today.

She said that while the Islamic law is the best, its implementation in this country remains weak.

“This is what Wanita Umno wants to fight for,” she said.
