Foreign traders hauled up in market raid

BUKIT MERTAJAM: The Immigration Department here arrested 16 foreign workers at the Bukit Mertajam wet market for not possessing valid documents.

Penang Immigration Department and Seberang Prai Municipal Council jointly conducted the operation with the help of volunteer police.

State Immigration enforcement unit head Khwaja Banthey Navaz said 19 foreigners at the market were checked.

“Sixteen of them including a woman were detained for not having valid documents and overstaying,” he told a press conference after the raid yesterday.

“They are from Myanmar, Bangladesh and Indonesia.”

He said the raid was in response to public complaints about illegal migrants working at the wet market, either as traders or workers.

“My 22 officers posed as customers and this made the arrests easier,” he said.

The council also shut down four stalls — two selling fish, one selling fruits and one selling nasi lemak — operated by foreigners at the market.

Its operation head Amirul Ariff said foreigners were not allowed to run businesses at markets.

“We confiscated their makeshift stalls, tables, chairs, weighing machines and cooling boxes during the raid,” he said.

Also present was state Immigration Department deputy assistant director Izham Idris.-thestar
