Islamic NGOs slam inaction

KUALA LUMPUR: A group of Islamic non-governmental organisations has slammed the alleged atrocities against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, calling them an affront to international human rights.

Majlis Amal Islami Malaysia (MAIM) chairman Dr Yusri Mohamad yesterday said the Myanmar government’s failure to act on the alleged massacre of the Rohingya was deplorable.

“The actions (against) and the bad treatment (towards the Rohingya) are not only a contravention of human rights, but also inhuman because innocent people, including women, pregnant women, children, and the elderly, are being murdered,” said Yusri, who is also Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (Yadim) chairman.

He said MAIM and Yadim called on all Muslims, including Malaysians, to support efforts to channel help to the Rohingya community, and support the international community in urging Myanmar to halt its “bad treatment” of the ethnic minority.

“The Myanmar government must allow the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and international media to enter (the country) to monitor and conduct a detailed investigation into the humanitarian crisis.”
