Major car theft syndicate busted

SERDANG: Police have crippled a major car theft and cloning syndicate with the arrest of 14 men and recovered RM800,000 worth of stolen cars.

The police sniffed out the syndicate following the theft of several luxury vehicles all over Selangor last month.

Selangor CID chief Senior Asst Comm Fadzil Ahmat said a special task force was set up to investigate the thefts.

“On Dec 13, we cornered two men in a Toyota Vellfire and a Proton Satria at a mall in Subang Jaya.

“We found various ownership documents in the Satria,” he said at a press conference at the Serdang police headquarters yesterday.

SAC Fadzil said the two men were arrested and 12 others were detained later.

“We also seized 10 cars, including three Toyota Vellfires worth about RM800,000, various tools used for changing the serial number of vehicles, documents from Puspakom and grants,” he added.

The arrests took place at workshops around the country, including Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Kedah, Terengganu, Johor and Kuala Lumpur, where stolen cars were cloned.

“They would give the cars a new forged serial number before selling them at a cheaper price in the local market,” SAC Fadzil said.

He said that while most of the workshops were used as storage facilities, the main one where the cars were cloned, was in Seremban.

“Out of the 14 men caught, six have prior criminal records related to theft and drugs,” he said, adding that a few were still under the Prevention of Crime Act (2013) restriction order.

The men are aged between 26 and 45.

SAC Fadzil also said police were investigating whether the syndicate had an insider in Puspakom or the Road Transport Department helping them.-thestar
