KUCHING: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is set to officially launch the 1.48km-long Batang Sadong bridge during the next general election, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri announced today.
She said this was because the RM211 million bridge project, approved by Najib in 2011, was something that the PM was passionate about.
“It (the project) was something close to his (Najib) heart, in wanting to upgrade the infrastructure facilities in the rural area.
“So, I have informed him about launching the bridge in the next (general) election, to make it meaningful as it was something that he promised during the previous election campaign. And, he was agreable with it.
“Hence, when he comes to launch the bridge, I guess it also indicates the election is near,” said the Batong Sadong MP.
Meanwhile, Nancy said more than 2,000 runners are expected to take part in the Batang Sadong Run 2016, to be held next Sunday.
It will be the first run to be held in the interior Sarawak. Participants will have a chance to stay at longhouses nearby and indulge in the local delicacies.
“It’s part of our effort to promote the constituency and the bridge. Thus far, we have received 1,652 registrations included two from Japan,” she said at the Kuching International Airport today
“This is also an opportunity for people to know more about Batang Sadong.” she said.-nst
