CIA report on 1983 BMF scandal has put Dr M in awkward position: Salleh

KUALA LUMPUR: Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is the last person in the country qualified and credible enough to ask Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to step down, said Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Salleh Keruak.

In a blog post today, Salleh said the latest revelation regarding the Bumiputra Malaysia Finance (BMF) and Forex scandal has put Dr Mahathir in an awkward position.

“As much as he (Dr Mahathir) is attempting to explain away the issue and treat them as if they are not material, it invariably reveals his hypocrisy and doubled standards.

“This is the conclusion anyone would draw from his recent very defensive chedet.com posting,” he said.

Yesterday, Dr Mahathir refuted allegations that a recently declassified CIA report showed he had a hand in the BMF scandal, by referring to the document itself.

In a statement posted on his blog, the longest-serving prime minister of Malaysia quoted parts of the report titled

“Directorate of Intelligence” dated March 5, 1985, to prove his innocence.

To avoid taking responsibility on the issues, Salleh said Dr Mahathir continues to use the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal as an excuse to attack Najib.

“Without question the CIA report exposes Mahathir’s responsibility in this mega-billion loss suffered by the country. And as usual he blames others except himself for this financial disaster.

“While Dr Mahathir refuses to accept responsibility for the BMF and Forex scandals, he is using the 1MDB issue as an excuse to topple the prime minister.

“The truth is 1MDB was sabotaged to turn it into a problem and it started with the sabotage of the (initial public offerings) IPO.” Salleh added.-nst
