Fast, furious: Couple leads police on car chase through Kuching

KUCHING: It was like a scene from an action movie when a couple led police on a two hour-long car chase in the city yesterday evening.

The pursuit started after the couple, both 21 and travelling in a Perodua Myvi, evaded a police roadblock at Jalan Tun Abdul Rahman Yaakob in Petra Jaya, near here, at about 4pm.

Fearing for the public’s safety, a team from the Gita traffic police station gave chase, with reinforcement from the Mobile Patrol Vehicle, which deployed seven patrol cars.

Despite being repeatedly commanded to pull over by the patrol team via their car speakers, the couple sped ahead into Desa Guruh, before trying to seek refuge in Taman Sukma.

The chase continued as the Myvi sped down Jalan Temenggong Haji Gobel, Semariang Batu, the Kuching North City Hall’s depo, Jalan Demak-Bako and Dusun Bayu.

The couple’s adventure finally came to an end when they were cornered at a dead end at Lorong Sourabaya Indah 2J in Taman Lebunda, two hours later.

Although the chase ended without any casualties, the Myvi is believed to have grazed several vehicles in their failed bid to escape arrest.

Kuching district police chief Assistant Commissioner Abang Ahmad Abang Julai said initial investigations showed the driver of the Myvi did not possess a driving license.

“The car driver and his passenger were arrested to assist investigation into the case,” said Abang Ahmad.
