Flood victims cheated by lorry drivers offering help, then demanding payment

TAMPIN: Several unscrupulous lorry owners are said to be taking advantage of flood victims in Taman Sungai Gemas here by offering to help ferry their household items, but unexpectedly demanding payment later.

One victim, known only as Letchumi, 88, said she gratefully accepted a lorry owner’s kind offer to help her move her household items yesterday, only to find out later that it came with a price.

“Today, he contacted my son demanding payment of RM10 for every large item moved to my friend’s place in Taman Desa Permai.

I am forced to pay RM40 because I moved my television, television table, refrigerator and sewing machine,” she said.

Meanwhile, Zarida, 62, said she would have declined the offer had she known it was not free.

Both of them had been evacuated, together with the 102 flood victims from Taman Sungai Gemas to the relief centre at Dewan Besar Gemas. — Bernama
