He ain’t heavy, he’s my son: Father carries son with muscular dystrophy to classroom

KUANTAN: Driving school instructor Tengku Faisal Rizal Tengku Toran’s love for his eldest son, who suffers from muscular dystrophy, knows no bounds.

Tengku Faisal Rizal stole the attention of teachers and parents at SK Teruntum here today when he carried his son Tengku Zahin Haziq, 11, on his back for the boy’s first day of the new school term.

Tengku Zahin, who is diagnosed with muscle weakness in the legs, had been experiencing walking difficulties and Tengku Faisal, 43, carried the former from the car to the classroom before returning occasionally to check on him.

Tengku Faisal said despite the disabilities, his son remained in high spirits and was excited to attend school after the long holidays.

“Last year, he (Tengku Zahin) was already showing signs of weaknesses but could still walk slowly. However, this year I had to fully assist him to get to his desk.

“The school decided to move his classroom to the ground floor and that has been a relief as he does not need to climb stairs. His class teacher and friends have been supportive, and they are the ones who will assist him to move around during my absence,” said Tengku Faisal, adding that his wife had packed Zahin’s food for recess so that their son could have a meal at his desk.

He said Tengku Zahin had been ill since he was born but they only realised that it became more severe when their son started to experience difficulties in walking when he was in Standard Two.
