In spite of MACC probe, Kedah PWD rejects claims of flaw in contract award system

JITRA: The Kedah Public Works Department (PWD) has no plan to review its current contract award system despite an ongoing probe by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on its senior assistant engineer over the alleged receipt of RM3 million in kickbacks.

Its director Datuk Samsudin Bakar said any instance of alleged corruption involving state PWD officers or personnel is the result of individual greed and does not suggest that there are loopholes in the system.

“Our system has no flaw. Any wrongdoing is due to a lack of integrity of an individual,” Samsudin said when met after attending balloting for state road maintenance projects at Politeknik Sultan Abdul Halim here.

Menteri Besar Kedah Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah officiated the balloting process.

Samsudin nevertheless stressed that the department views the case involving the senior assistant engineer seriously, as it involves its integrity.

“The senior officer will be transferred to another unit, pending completion of MACC’s probes,” he said.

It was reported that MACC had detained a 56-year-old senior assistant engineer with the Kedah PWD on Jan 18 in connection with an alleged RM3 million corruption case.

A day after the arrest, the MACC froze two unit trust accounts belonging to the man and his wife, with an accumulated investment worth RM600,000.

On the same day, the MACC also seized RM1.1 million in cash from the couple’s home in Yan.

Yesterday, Kedah MACC released the suspect on RM100,000 bail with two sureties, pending a completion of the investigation.-nst
