SUNGAI PETANI: A security guard at a UOB Bank branch in Taman Ria Jaya here foiled an attempt by a lone man to rob the bank this morning.

It is learnt that the man had barged into the bank moments after one of the bank staff arrived for work at about 8.30am.

Witnesses claimed that at least three shots were fired in the ensuing struggle between the guard and the robber, but the guard eventually managed to subdue the man.

The guard, who sustained gunshot wounds on his leg, was rushed to the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital via an ambulance.

At press time, policemen have sealed off the bank, with police patrol cars lined up outside the premises.

It is believed that the robber is still being detained inside the bank while policemen conduct their investigations.

None of the bank staff were harmed in the incident.-nst
