Taxi touts at KLIA, klia2 to face the music in court today

SEPANG: Three taxi touts will be charged in the Sepang courts today following a day-long crackdown on illegal taxi services at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and klia2 last night.

Their illegal activities were put to an end by the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD), headed by its enforcement division chief, Datuk Che Hasni Che Ahmad.

“We arrested the trio during our operations today. All three are in their 30s,” Che Hasni told reporters at the SPAD office in KLIA last night.

The illegal taxi drivers will be charged under Section 205 of the Land Public Transport Act 2010, for soliciting and touting – where if found guilty, they could be fined up to RM50,000 or face five years imprisonment, or both.

Che Hasni warned that his team would continue with their enforcement crackdown on illegal taxi services in KLIA and will not show any mercy on any unscrupulous individuals.

As of December 2016, 58 taxi touts have been arrested in similar operations in KLIA as well as klia2, including 13 Uber and GrabCar drivers who had misused the ride-hailing apps.

“Uber and GrabCar drivers can pick up passengers from the airport by using the apps, but they can’t personally approach the passengers and persuade them to use their car service,” he said.

He added that to date, SPAD has issued illegal taxi drivers with fines totaling RM229,400. -nst
