Fisherman missing, son drowns, after boat capsizes near Miri

MIRI: A 68-year-old fisherman has gone missing, while his 18-year-old son was found drowned, after their fishing boat capsized in waters near Kampung Muhibbah, Kuala Baram Lama, near here last night.

The body of Stewart Rumpun was found by a search and rescue (SAR) team at a jetty near the village at 8.20am this morning.

The victim’s grief-stricken relatives were present when the SAR team retrieved his body.

Meanwhile, the search for his father, Rumpun Pungat, continues.

Rumpun and Stewart, along with two other fishermen, aged 47 and 48, were returning home after a day at sea when their boat capsized due to strong winds and high waves at about 11pm.

Miri Zone Fire and Rescue Department head Law Poh Kiong said the two other fishermen managed to swim to shore.

“A team of seven (from our search and rescue team) was deployed to the scene upon receiving a distress call at 11.30pm,” said Law.-nst
