Penang triad left lame and limping

GEORGE TOWN: With its top two ‘dragons’ out of the picture, the notorious Gang 24 known for its protection rackets and illegal moneylending is crippled.

The gang’s alleged big boss Datuk Seri Ng Chian Sia, 55, was nabbed at a casino in Pahang last month while his deputy Datuk Ong Teik Kwong (pic), 32, was shot dead at the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway by his bodyguard on Dec 1 last year.

Datuk Ong Teik Kwong was shot by his own bodyguard.

Penang CID chief Senior Asst Comm Zainol Samah said the police have effectively crippled the Gang 24 after 22 alleged active members, including its top boss, were charged in court on Monday.

“Our investigations showed that members were actively involved in gang activities and had committed numerous criminal offences.

“We are now looking for nine more members who have since gone into hiding. It’s just a matter of time before they are caught,” he said when contacted.

According to a Chinese vernacular newspaper congratulatory advertisement in 2015, Ng was conferred the Sri Sultan Ahmad Shah Pahang (SSAP) title, which carries the title of Dato’ Sri, by the Sultan of Pahang.

SAC Zainol said Ng was restricted to Sabak Bernam in Selangor for two years under the Emergency (Public Order and Prevention of Crime) Ordinance.

He was also sent to the Batu Gajah Prison for 18 months under the Special Preventive Measures (LLPK) for alleged drug trafficking.

He was charged in a Sessions Court here, together with 21 others, under Section 130V(1) of the Penal Code for being Gang 24 members.

They were arrested in Singapore, Penang and several other states during Ops Cantas Mutiara that was launched on Jan 28 by the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigations Depart-ment and Penang Criminal Investigations Department.

The accused, aged between 24 and 55, were being detained as the Sessions judge Roslan Hamid did not allow bail and fixed March 20 for mention.

The prosecution did not offer bail as the case fell under the provision of Chapter 6B of the Penal Code which is tried under Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma).-thestar
