Zaid likely to join DAP next week

PETALING JAYA: Former law minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim is expected to join DAP next week, according to party sources.

Zaid had been widely speculated to be planning a return to active politics and DAP is his likely vehicle.

According to an invitation which has been making its rounds, Zaid will be attending a press conference at the Royal Selangor Club in Jalan Bukit Kiara, Damansara, on Tuesday.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and national adviser Lim Kit Siang will also be at the event, as will former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who is also Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia chairman.

DAP national organising secretary Anthony Loke declined to confirm if Zaid will be joining DAP, saying only that he is unaware of the details of the press conference because it was organised by “Zaid’s people”.

“But I can confirm that the function will take place on Tuesday,” he said when contacted Friday.

Zaid, who could not be reached for comments, is said to be keeping mum over his move to DAP next week.

Appointed as law minister in March 2008, Zaid resigned from the Cabinet six months later following his criticism of the then Internal Security Act used against DAP’s Seputeh MP Teresa Kok, journalist Tan Hoon Chen and blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin.

He was suspended by Umno later that year and joined PKR in June 2009.

However, Zaid had a fallout with the PKR leadership and formed Parti Kesejahteraan Insan Tanah Air in December 2010, and eventually resigned as president due to internal squabbling.-thestar
