Liow: Weight limit for lorries to increase immediately

ALOR SETAR: The weight limit for small lorries have been increased to 7,000kg from 5,000kg with immediate effect, a move aimed at reducing cost of transportation.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the government made the decision after conducting a series of meetings and discussions with the Works Ministry, Road Safety Council and Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD).

He said all safety elements and the current structure of lorries and engine capacity had been taken into account before the decision was made.

He said the increase in weight limit for the commercial vehicles is only for peninsular Malaysia, adding that the weight increment was not appropriate for roads and bridges in Sabah and Sarawak.

The move would strengthen the logistics sector, Liow said after chairing the 58th Road Safety Council annual general meeting here on Monday.

“There are many other advantages by increasing the weight limit (such as) it will reduce the cost of transporting goods by 7% which will eventually lead to a reduction in the cost of living and help the small and medium industry,” he said.-thestar
