College student held after body of newborn found

KUCHING: A 24-year-old college student was arrested after a dead newborn was found in a rubbish bin at an apartment complex.

The woman, a third-year diploma student from Belaga, was picked up at one of the apartments in Samajaya at about 12.30pm yesterday, not long after the body was discovered.

Sarawak CID chief Senior Asst Comm Dev Kumar said a cleaner spotted a red cardboard box in the bin at about 10am and was shocked to find the body of a baby girl in it.

“She alerted the apartment management and the police were called.

“An investigation revealed that the baby was delivered less than four hours earlier, in the bathroom of the apartment,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Police are initially investigating the case as concealment of a birth by disposing of the baby’s body.

“But if we find evidence that the baby was still alive when dumped, we will recommend that the suspect be charged with murder,” said SAC Dev.-thestar
