Man caught on video fatally knocking down Penang pedestrian claims trial to charge

GEORGE TOWN: A 44-year-old man, who was captured on video speeding off after ramming his motorcycle into a female pedestrian on Jalan Burma last week, pleaded not guilty at the Magistrates Court today to a charge of causing death by reckless driving.

The accused, Nazri Che Lah, claimed trial after the charge was read out to him before Magistrate Mohamad Amin Shahul Hamid.

Nazri, who is a ship crew member, was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a jail term of no less than two years and no more than 10 years, and fine of a minimum RM5,000 and a maximum of RM20,000.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Fatin Hussin asked for bail to be set at RM15,000 and for Nazri’s driving licence to be suspended.

However, Nazri pleaded for a lighter bail sentence, reasoning he could not afford the bail amount because he has an unemployed wife to support.

Amin set bail at RM10,000 with one surety and suspended Nazri’s licence.

He also fixed May 29 for mention.

It was reported that Foo Swee Wah, 58, was knocked down by the motorcyclist while she was walking across a zebra crossing in Jalan Burma.

She died at 8.45pm while being treated at the hospital.

A 12-second video clip released by police, which has since gone viral, shows Foo walking along zebra crossing.

Three seconds later, the speeding motorcyclist slams into her, dropping a motorcycle helmet in process without stopping.

Foo was flung several feet by the impact before falling to the ground.

The man, when asked by reporters later, said he had not stopped at the zebra crossing as he was rushing for work.

He said he did not stop to help after knocking down Foo because he was afraid he would get beaten up by the public. – NST Online
