We’ll go after you too, cops tell parents of reckless teen cyclists

JOHOR BARU: Police will take action against the parents or guardians of teenagers involved in illegal night cycling activities.

State police chief Comm Datuk Seri Wan Ahmad Najmuddim Mohd said the arrest of 22 teenage cyclists at around 3am on April 1 should not happen again.

“It shows that the fatal incident on Feb 18 did not teach the families of these cyclists a good lesson,” he said on Monday after visiting patients at Hospital Sultanah Aminah with 20 members of the Johor Police Family Association in conjunction with the 210th Police Day.

“If this happens again, we will go after their parents,” he said, adding that action could be taken against the offenders’ parents or guardians under the Child Act 2001.

The 22 teenage cyclists were detained at the very same spot in Jalan Lingkaran Dalam, opposite the Mahmoodiah Muslim cemetery, where eight cyclists died when a car rammed into them at about 3am on Feb 18.

Comm Wan Ahmad said police would submit proposals for tackling the problem to the Mentri Besar’s office soon.-thestar
